Traveling up towards the Mauna Loa Observatory on the Big Island of Hawaii there is a beautiful forest of ʻōhiʻa lehua trees. ʻŌhiʻa trees grow easily on lava and are often times the first vegetation to take hold on a flow. These particular ʻōhiʻa trees and their stunning red blooms, located at about 6,600 feet above sea level, serve as a perfect frame for majestic Maunakea towering to 13,796 feet to the north.
