Icefields Bend
Icefields Bend
I had the opportunity to experience many beautiful scenes while in the Canadian Rockies last week but I was drawn to this bend in the Athabasca River more than once. On my last visit, the light was just spectacular but I wondered if I could truly capture it with the fidelity it deserved. From the brilliant Sun hiding behind the gray clouds to the muddled yellow beams of light to the turquoise hued water to the deep blue sky framing the white snow swept mountains it was a masterpiece of nature but a real challenge for the camera (and the photographer). I had to use a number of techniques to make it work...made even more difficult as I shot this as an 8-panel panoramic. The thing I fear most when doing photography is having an amazing vista like this and failing to do it justice...and knowing that it is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. This photograph took a lot of thinking on site to faithfully capture what I saw but, in the end, it turned out to be one of my favorite images and memories from the trip.
